The Farm

“I would rather be on my farm than be emperor of the world.”

George Washington

Peaceful, quiet, totally zen… this is how I describe where we live. Somewhere in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by many beautiful trees, but seriously affect me come springtime… you know, allergies. It doesn’t stop me from enjoying all the little things living out in the country has to offer.

Before we started our farm, Wade and I discussed back and forth how we were going to do it. “Should we start with a garden?” “Maybe chickens?” “How about raising cattle and pigs?” “Do you like goats?” SO MANY QUESTIONS!!

I’m sure many seasoned, and new farmers started with the whys, hows, whats, and whens. This is how you create your game plan. All the little things you think of, all the ideas that pop up, and the ultimate drive to reach your goal. Sure, sometimes things get in the way, such as life events, other priorities, not having the budget for the farm, a ton of projects needing to be done ASAP… I can list a lot more. Trust me; there are so many times when I get so discouraged that my motivation goes downhill. The truth is, it’s not easy. Starting anything is not easy, especially if your resources are limited.

We just did it anyway. We started our garden. We raised chickens and turkeys. Now, we have ducks.

Last year was stressful. Renovating the horse barn into a chicken barn took a while to finish. Between Wade having a full-time job, me not knowing how to swing a hammer, and the limited budget for lumber, it was a vast project that kept being put off for weeks at a time. Baby steps. Once we got all the lumber we needed, and Wade had an entire weekend to work on it, plus our awesome neighbor pitched in to help, the barn was finally done. Can you say “WOOHOO”?!?!

Another big project was the garden. Ok, let me tell you all, we have a ton of rocks here. Like literally, rocks in the soil. We have sandy soil and big stones. I seriously think that our soil is composed of 80% rock/gravel and 20% sand. It’s ridiculous! Everywhere you dig, you get rocks as small as a marble to as big as a full-size turkey. What does this have to do with the garden? EVERYTHING! We did not want to spend $$$ on dirt, so we had to sift through piles of available soil and separate the big rocks to have excellent, workable soil to plant seeds and potted plants in. It was blood, sweat, and tears (especially for Wade). The result? A beautiful 50’x50’ garden that we are proud of.

Starting the farm was a learning curve for us. We have a long ways to go until we reach our goal. We’re learning so much every day, and we love it!

I’m not going to lie or sugarcoat anything. IT IS HARD. So many sleepless nights, discussions (negative and positive), misunderstandings, failures, and losses. However, we have a lot of laughter, fun, wins, and funny incidents we joke about, and best of all, it has brought us closer. We love working together. We love our farm.

I am so glad to have you on here, whether you’ve come across us randomly on our YouTube channel, one of our social media accounts, or you know us personally! Please continue to join us in this beautiful journey we’re on. And I do hope you’ll love our farm as much as we do.

Until next time,

Sary
